I think it's best if someone can be home with the retired dog most of the
time.  Guide dogs have been surrounded by people their whole lives. 
They're not used to being alone for very long at a time.  I expect there
are a few who don't mind being left alone all day while their owner goes
off to work, but I'm sure most would prefer some company.  I'm not even
talking about dogs who get really anxious when they're alone.  I think
they all prefer company, even if they don't have a fit when they're left
alone.
