Actually fetch isn't always quite that straight forward.  Same thing  
with opening doors.  Every door is different and requires a great deal  
of maneuvering and thinking on the dog's part especially in tricky or  
tight situations.
The same can be said for retrieve work.  Sure, there are some times  
when I point to my shoes, tell her to get them and she does.  However  
there are times when I need an object which is hard to reach or there  
are times when I drop an object when the dog isn't in the room and she  
has to come and search the area for anything out of place and find it.

My retired border collie guide takes great pleasure in hiding my shoes  
when she comes to visit.  It is up to Mill'E, my golden, to find them  
and believe me; she has had to search the house from top to bottom,  
under the couch cushions, behind furniture etc.
Mostly retrieving is simple but there are frequently times when  
initiative is required.
