yes you are using different muscles.
I think you want to feel more with your feet using a cane than you do 
with a dog.
Because you know that the dog for the most part is going to watch out 
for you, as you do go faster, needing to pick up feet or trip the crack 
that suddenly realizes it needs to jump up and bite a shoe.
Or in sandles when a toe bumps the walk.
I have cried many times over that one.
