Margo, I think the description you gave of carrying the plate was pretty 
much what I do.

I put Arrow somewhat behind me and loop his leash around my left arm while
oing through the line.  I hold my plate and ask someone to put the food on
it.  when going to a table, my right arm is under the plate and my right
hand is holding onto the edge of the plate furthest from me.  Not the best
explanation but the best I CAN COME UP with for now.
