Subject: [nagdu] Issuing dogs at 18 months - is it too young?

I think that is too young. Many of the schools raised the age for training
the dogs was because there was too much real puppy behavior and chewing. So
the schools are going back to this problem??? Getting the dogs at two is
puppy enough for me! To me, this is like giving a 14 year old kid the same
responsibilities as an adult of 30. The dogs need maturation time and I
don't think most dogs are there at 18 months old.

I got my second guide when she was one year old and I think she was born
mature! She was an unusual dog in the maturity department. This same dog
was ready to retire at age 7. So, I don't think you get more working time
out of a dog by training and issueing a dog that young. Last month, I met a
new guide from GDB that was 18 months old - a yellow Lab. Who knows how
  long this dog will work.

I just think that the dogs need to mature a bit longer and issuing them at
  22 months is young enough.

  Lyn and Landon
