Well, I will be happy to go to war on your behalf, but would prefer
Benny boy keep on preventing that. /smile/

Probably a good start as to reminding drivers that they should look
before they steer that big hunk of metal would be to crack down hard and
fast when they don't. And maybe if the news report about their
destructive negligence didn't make it sound like this all just happened
while they were sitting there in their car wouldn't hurt, either. If
they don't care about the consequences of their actions on others, then
ensuring they face consequences that are meaningful to them would d
encourage them to pay attention -- and might encourage others to
consider whether they wish to remain as negligent. I mean, if they're
the ones who are going to get hurt by having to pay money and spend time
in jail and have all those mean things said about them...! Well, they'd
better be careful.

The article we're all discussing here is a really good case in point.
All the vague verbs and adjectives and measures of time and force, along
with point of the report being apparently that the guy was real sweet
but, hey! the dog will recover! could have been about the driver of a
car that struck a pedestrian resulting in his death might give a
different impression? If nothing else, the first driver might feel bad,
so that's something. If we're going with all those emotionally laden
adjectives, why not go ahead and toss in "irresponsible" "careless"
"negligent". The irresponsible driver of the vehicle that struck the
pedestrian... Etc. As for the second driver... Maybe we could try, "
who also failed to watch out for what was in front of him..." or
something. Both drivers waited until it was too late to get out of
their vehicles and offer assistance. See? If you put it like that, it
doesn't make everything okay, does it? /evil grin/
