Thanks Marsha!

Louis maher is the president here.  I got swindled into being elected
Secretary of the chapter last month.  Smile!  I've been in the organization
since late 2009 but wasn't very active.  I really wasn't aware of meetings
and other events but that's working really well now.  I've been in heavy
rotation just beginning this year.  

A little background about me...I lost my sight three years ago to RP which I
didn't know I had.  My sight was perfect until the week I lost it almost
completely.  I'm really glad that mine went that fast because it forced me
to deal with the hand I was dealt.  I was a walker for excercise and
recreation and didn't enjoy the cane mobility because it wasn't at the pace
I liked walking and I could never increase it to the speed I wanted.  I
didn't have mobility for a year due to a counselor at Blind Services.  So I
got mobility for six months and got out there, got lost, found my way back
and got better with doing those maps in my head.  I still don't really like
that, but getting better.

Someone told me I should think about getting a guide dog and I did some
research and applied to Seeing Eye and the school out in San Rafael.  I
forget the name off hand.  I like what I read about those and said whoever
called me first was where I was going and it was Seeing Eye history.  Gypsy
has been a God send...even though she's a human in a dog suit!

I've been president of a few non-profit organizations, one of which was the
largest in the State and 2nd largest in the country.  I've started my own
non-profit and now starting my own business.  As you can probably tell, I
don't like to sleep.  Ha!

Well, I guess I've rambled enough.  Hope this wasn't too much for the ears.

Ah, your in Houston. Houston has a NFB chapter, not sure who the president
is. And Houston also has a parents of blind children chapter. Now when I was
in Texas, we tried hard to get a NAGDU affiliate started, just not enough
people interested. The lady I think, who is still working on a committee, is
Liz Campbell, and she is in fort Worth. If you want to get more info about
the NFB in Texas, go to www.nfb-tx.org there are a lot of guide dog users in
Texas, and perhaps in the Houston chapter. Hope this helps!

Welcome to this list. I'm marsha, currently working my second guide from
TSE. Emma is a GSD, and we have been working for 3 years, she just turned 5
in January. Emma and I live in PA with my hubby. Currently I am a full time
student at the local community college, but will be transferring to Temple
University in the fall. I am originally from Texas, was born and grew up in
Texas for 30 some odd years. 

What part of Texas are you in? My mom is also a chapter president for the
Dallas chapter.
