I think it's breed-related. Roger and I often travel together. I have a
German Shepherd and he has a golden retriever. He is constantly harassed by
people who want to pet his golden retriever, or who bring their troop of
kids up to pet him. My German shepherd gets the comments like Wayne talked
about. Or law enforcement personnel will come up to ask about her because
they like the breed and they think she's an unusual color. I don't get the
harassment that Roger has to put up with. And, as I said, we travel a lot
together, so it's not that we're traveling in such different areas.

Guys, it's not the cuteness of the dog, but the cutenss of us humans!
Everybody understand now?

I think it may have to do with the cuteness of the dog. With my first
guide,a yellow Lab, it seemed like we attracted people from every
direction and though I did have a sign, it didn't do any good. My
current guide,a German Shepherd, has still attracted some attention,
but there's a noticeable change in the numbers of people that will
venture over for a closer look, whether they're afraid of the GSD, had
a bad experience with a GSD, or some other reason. That's fine by me
though, :) Actually, I've been pleasantly surprised by the numbers of
those that still come up to me, even though the dog is one of those
"vicious breeds." Mostof them have said something like, "That dog
reminds me of my mom's brother's sister's aunt's uncle's cousin's
dog." The decrease in petting attempts might also have to do with
where I live too, since people seem to be more aware of disabilities
and service animals here, which is also nice to see.

They said this new device was not available until July 6th. which was while
the convention was still there. Its a new device and what the guy demoed
worked very well giving allot of detail of what is around you and
descriptions of things. Demo's are, or at least usually always better than
the real thing though.

FYI it was last July not this July that it was available. It is not perfect
yet, and there is some redoing at Walt Disney World. It is also there 40th
Anniversary in October.

They said this new device was not available until July 6th. which was
while
the convention was still there. Its a new device and what the guy demoed
worked very well giving allot of detail of what is around you and
descriptions of things. Demo's are, or at least usually always better
than
  the real thing though.

Hi Gloria:

I am only a year out from getting my first dog. My best advice is try not
to get too worked up and nervous. It will go well. There will be some
trying times but not really that many. I think the key is to stay patient.
My dog, a poodle, was really one who tested me and people thought I was
extremely patient. I'm sure a few times I felt like throttling Bogart but,
of course, I never did. My dogs two things at school was not wanting to sit
or lie at the dinner table. It would be one chew, bogart sit down, chew
chew, bogart down, chew chew, sit bogart. The other weird thing he did was
while on leash in the school, often refuse to walk down the stairs. He would
stand on the landing and not move. Although I know now he isn't fond of
stairs (will always find the esculator or elevator in the subway rather than
the steep stairs) this was just his way of saying screw you, I'm the boss.
In reflection it was all pretty funny. He still has a bit of a stubborn
streak but is really special, guides well and is a good addition to our
family.

Have fun and it will all go wonderfully.

Gary

Subject: [nagdu] Free Guide Dog Gift Bags

Hello Guide Dog Users!

We have 30 donated gift bags for guide dogs and will be sending them out
August 1st. These gift bags consist of: one leather dog leash, one
stainless food - water bowl, one package of ear wipes, one nylon dymo bone
and a coupon for 20 pounds of dog food (four different types but only one
coupon per winner).

If we have thirty one or more requests then we'll have a drawing July 31st
and the first thirty will recieve the gift bags. If under thirty requests
then all will recieve them. No cost or obligation just have had them
donated and their only request is to pass the gift bags along to guide dog
owners.

If your interested in entering this then send us your name, mailing address
and if your one of the thirty winners we'll notify you to watch for your
package by email around August 4th.

Send us off list your information to

Mr. Wermuth,
I feel this is not an appropriate message for this list. The purpose of
this list is to further the goals of the National Federation of the Blind
and the National ASsociation of Guide Dog Users. Soliciting subscribers
contact information with the use of such an incentive is not in keeping with
these goals. Please do not make any further such solicitations on this list.

Gay,

Yeah, I have really come to value that "screw you" attitude in Mitzi
because when we have an argument, she so often turns out to be right
even when I win. And it shows in really great things in her work that I
appreciate to no end. But I could still cheerfully strangle her I do
like the give and take in our partnership because it gives us so much
flexibility. And that crazy smart mind of hers is working all the time.
We haven't been downtown or doing and really city-type sidewalk and
traffic work forever, but she was pitch perfect. Incredible. I was so
proud of her I could hardly stand it. She worked a fuller day like that
and having to be totally perfect for the first time in way too long, and
DD said he could see her working to remember everything, which she did.
She was pretty zonked out when we got home, but still jumped up to go
out to dinner once we'd given Daisy a potty break. Love that
poodle. /grin/ /

She's really picky about insisting that I u se the right command for the
occasion, so when I forget commands or use the wrong one, she's just
totally uncooperative. /lol/ Except for left and right, which I don't
seem to have a 50 percent chance of getting right for some reason. Maybe
because I'm a lefty? Anyway, she knows which one I mean, either way, so
we're good there. /lol/

Subject: [nagdu] Ooops! Re: First Time Guide Dog User

Gary,

Sorry for the name change there! Can't type worth beans today, but I'm
not sure how I missed that in proofreading. Apparently, I can't proof
read worth beans, either. /smile/

Oh, I'd meant to mention that Mitzi is not a big fan of sitting or lying
down under tables, either. She started managing to do it without all the
fuss from me when she was nearly 4, and now she's pretty good at it when
she needs to be. Honestly, though, if I can I arrange to sit in a spot
where she can sit or stand without being int he way or disruptive. And,
of course, where she can watch what's going on. /smile/ She can lie
quietly under a table or beside my chair when the occasion requires it,
though, which I was beginning to think would *never* happen. So there is
hope for your poodle boy. I should warn you, it takes awhile to remember
thow to just eat and talk and enjoy a nice quiet dinner at a
restaurant. /lol/

Rebecca ,

I'd suggest you contact Marion off list about your idea. Personally,
I'm not sure it's a good idea to dredge up unpleasantness from the
past. I think letting it go and moving on is probably better, but who
knows? Perhaps the time has come to revisit it so we can move forward.

At any rate, I don't think anyone on the public list is going to be able
to assist you with your idea.

Best,
Julie

Buddy,
Yup, this was my experience too. The sign I used even had a picture of
a dog's head with a hand reaching to pet and a giant red slash through
the whole thing. Even if the person couldn't read or had difficulty
with English, the picture should have been clear. Unfortunately what
seems very obvious to me isn't to everyone else. *sigh*
