                                Great post Tami!
You're lucky Wayne "gets" it. And you wrote it so well. Shawn doesn't. He tries but he doesn't.

Subject: Re: [nagdu] nagdu Digest, Vol 75, Issue 8

It's a good question, and I have wondered when I try to form strategies for
myself... I've heard of others using the strategy of just standing up to
the denial and refusing to leave until the one who's actually breaking the
law calls 911 on *them." Results of this course of action do seem to vary
by location and local culture, including local police culture. Sigh. I
don't really know all the ins and outs of the local police cultures
throughout the Portland Metro area, but I do know the culture of the Oregon
Commission for the Blind -- which would have a lot of influence, I think --
and of the overall culture of blindness that agency has created in this
state. Let me say that I am *not* optimistic, no matter who calls in the
cops. Urgh! When DD and I do strategy planning sessions -- we're both
step-thinkers and scenario planners, so we do that sort of thing for fun
just by nature -- he's in favor of a) punching the person in the nose; b)
using a size 13 in a sensitive area and c) calling the cops right then and
there. He gets frustrated with me because I plan on the assumption that I
am on my own without recourse based on the unavoidable fact that I am not
just blind, but female. I assume that whatever really happens, the
law-breaker, even if they go as far as physical assault, will be believed by
default. And that will be that. So when I do have even a minor access
challenge, I'm already counting the cost to me of simply refusing to allow
my basic civil rights to be violated.

Well, DD does get that, due to being gay and thus marginalized and always
knowing it's open season on you and all your friends. He also gets that I'm
at a disadvantage he is not, due to my lack of manly size and muscles.
/lol/ In my imagination, it works for me to just go all Buffy on bigots and
law breakers, but I seem to have trouble accessing my Slayer Strength in the
real world. I can defend myself -- and have suffered enough from the one
time I failed to do that actively thinking it would be better to address the
matter with the assailant's boss (ha!) not to plan to do that without
thinking next time -- but I ain't gonna start nothing, that's for sure. And
there's no guarantee that my using active self-defense in a crisis would
work out the way I think it should. And if you think I like admitting
that... /shudder/

So, what am I left with? A long list of options that I can sift through on
the spot to adapt to circumstances, should they arise. And an absolute
obsession over getting an accessible camera phone, which I can't afford due
to still paying for medical expenses for that earlier assault while I still
don't have adaptive tech to earn a living. Sigh. Getting there, but I
won't feel adequately armed and protected until I can get it on digital
knowing I can put it on the internet when the authorities fail ... And, as
you can see, a whopping case of bitter cynicism. Yay me!

Anyway, that doesn't answer the question directly about whether to use 911
over access denials. The ones I have faced so far have been so tame that I
could just talk or alpha-b my way through them, cheerful in the
understanding that ignoring a would-be bully is about the meanest thing you
can do to them. Even when someone has literally tried to stand in my way, I
guess the blank stare and slight shift to a dominant posture causes them to
start to fidget and shift their feet so my zippy little guide dog can just
whip us past them. Haven't had to step things up so far as to start asking
for the manager or any of that. I will, sooner or later, I'm sure,
especially as we begin to travel more again outside our usual haunts and
outside of Portland -- where GDB has done such a good job of educating the
public about guide dogs and where guide dogs in various stages of training
and working aren't such a familiar site. I make fun of people's confusion
about Mitzi since she is so entirely unlike the famous mellow yellow GDB
labs that folks can't wrap their heads around her being a guide dog. Still,
I benefit a lot by GDB's presence in and around my community. It helps when
everyone around is well informed about my legal rights when it comes to my
dog. So that's been nice for me. Elsewhere, beyond that convenient
buffer... I guess we'll see if I get it right when something serious comes
up!

(\911? Interesting. I unbderstand being attacked, but being refused access
makes me cringe in how 911 is being for a non-emergent situation. Thoughts
folks?

Hello all, Needles to say, after reading the story about a dog being forced
to ride in the trunk of a cab, in Denver of all places, I'm livid!! Denver
has a huge blind population, and that never should hapend. I know we at GDB
are taught that if we are attacked or refused access due to our dog, we are
to call 911. Was that done? I know my dog is like my child, and there is
no in ever that I would have let someone put her inthe trunk!! No place is
that important where I wouldn't be able to call for another cab if a driver
tried to do that. I really hope this situation shows people what to do in
the future. Holly and Pollyann
