[nagdu] NFB Convention Guide Dog Policy

Rebecca,
Your killing me. I for one would like to see the responsible individual who
needs to have the family with them and all their pets to boot. From what I
am hearing no one living thing is safe at home alone.

I left my husband home alone recently. He drank beer and ate junk. What
should I do? What if there'd been a fire? Or worse, what if he'd run out of
beer? Clearly, he can't be left unsupervised.

I use my cane, but again, I treat my dog like I would my child, I realize
not the same to most on this list, but I would not leave my child alone in a
hotel room, even if she is the best in the world, I would leave her with a
babysitter or something.

If I go out without Maxx, I leave him with Nelson, or with my daughter if we
go out on a date, or we both are going away, depending on how long, either
my cousin, but no I don't leave Maxx alone.

Sorry to disappoint you.

That is the way I was raised, that is being responsible for my things, or
people or husband or child, and that includes my dog. He is part of my life
and I don't want anything to happen to him, because then it would be my
fault.

Now if you can all grow up and stop picking on me. That would be great.
Thanks.

the policies are, I am sure, for ill trained pets. Like i said, and you
can
affirm your status as a travel professional, but as a traveler, and not a
travel professional, I feel good about my decisions concerning my choices,
in accommodations and whether I choose to leave my dog at home or at a
hotel should I feel it appropriate. A fire can happen at home just as
easily, are you insinuating that you never, ever leave the house without
  your dog?

dog

    Cheryl,

That has never been told to me in any of the hotels or inns I have
stayed
  at
from mew york city to California. So, I am not sure if this is a policy
  for
all hotels as you seem to infer, or is it just a policy when there are a
group of guide dog users at a convention. Either way, I am happy to say
no
one has ever told me what to do with my guide when to leave him or not
and
  I
am certainly not going to be staying anywhere that tries that stuff.

fyi, in any situation whether blind or sighted, hotels that allow dogs
do
not allow them unattended, it is a fair statement that NAGDU follows
this
    policy.

And if you are not going to convention then you have nothing to worry
  about.

I would have to agree here. It also harkens one to think that the very
organization which professes our need to be independent and self
determining, that perhaps those of us with a guide have no apparent
    control
over our dogs. I for one leave my dog home from time to time and use
my
cane. I never come home to anything other then a possible chewed up
  piece
    of
random paper which I lef out. I also have traveled extensively and
have
    left
my guide in the hotel room, only to find what you would ask? a
sleeping
    dog,
who behaved perfectly while I was out. ridiculous.

I object to this policy. I object to the notion that I need special
  rules
and supervision because I choose to use a guide dog. It makes me feel
unwelcome at convention. Of course, I'd be perfectly welcome, if I
acknowledge that I need others to tell me how to handle my dog, or,
  better
yet, leave the smelly troublmaking beast at home.
So I will be spending my time, money, and energy in places where I
will
actually be treated like an intelligent, responsible adult. Too bad
      that's not the NFB convention.
Funny thing is, I bet Marion would object too, if it wasn't NFB
      leadership decreeing it.
