Good afternoon all!
A question I would like to pose is where do you find that there is an
attempt to deny access to a person with a service animal generally?
As for me, I've worked with Gypsy for about a year and we've only had an
issue three times. One was the week we got home and my mobility instructor
took me out to eat as celebration for making it through training. We went
to a Vietnamese restaurant. the hostess sat us down and all of a sudden the
manager rushed the table and began yelling, "No pets! No pets! You cannot
bring in your pet!" Surprisingly I was very calm...considering this was one
of our first forays into the public after leaving the school. I told him
that she was a service animal and that she was allowed. He kept yelling and
my mobility guy went the heck livid. The manager then left us alone.
I then, some months later, went to a convenience store near my apartment.
I've been in there many times but this particular time, Gypsy and I walked
in and the clerk began yelling and cussing. Of course, I won't and can't
repeat what he said here. He went on and on like that. I offered to call
the police for him after repeated attempts to tell him she was a guide dog
and to show her ID card and bring attention to the harness wrapped around
her. Gypsy just sat and stared at the man. Needless to say, he called the
police himself while berating me until they got there. I showed the police
the ID card and they saw Seeing Eye on the harness. They proceeded to write
the man a ticket. I then organized about five folks with guide dogs to make
a visit to the store. He said nothing.
most recently was this week. A co-worker and I went to a Chinese restaurant
for lunch and the cashier ran to the door saying, "Get out!"
We've honestly had very few experiences considering our time home and the
amount we do go out. It seems though that when we get those few folks who
are simply uninformed....they're really uninformed! LOL!
Have you experienced this problem and what have you done about it?
