[nagdu] Where Do You Find Issues with Attempted Denial of Entry

Oh, what's a little thing like the law of land when you're talking to a
blind person? If the guy doesn't care what the dog is, he can just yell and
scream at the blind person to scare him into going away, right? Wrong!
People who use those kind of bullying tactics against someone they perceive
as weaker just do not impress me.

So I sort of developed my schtick for dealing with bullying types back in
the day when I was a sweet young girl geek in a hick town, then as a sweet
young girl geek in the city working my way up the corporate ladder due to my
natural geek skills and brains in jobs that were still considered a man's
field. I believe that women like me who excelled and kept working our
you-know-whats off and such and talking to corporate execs like we were
their equals were called something fairly unprintable, especially by the
power-tripping execs who had ways of dealing with uppity females. Ah, the
good old days.

So I found the direct eye contact and body language to be very effective at
letting someone higher up the ladder work it out of his system so that we
could go on an work productively together. Who knew? /lol/

Anyway, I worried about that a bit as my central vision started to go, since
I didn't know if I could pull it off when I couldn't see the eyes I was
trying to contact... Especially as I began to clue in that there are some
nasty bullies out there just waiting for somebody weak and helpless to push
around and intimidate. Sigh. Turns out, it still seems to work for me even
though I'm just guessing where the person's eyes are. My current working
theory is that the utter lack of concern with all the huff and puff that I
am communicating eventually gives the other person cause to reconsider and
settle down and use some reason. /smile/

Or call the cops on themselves so they can get a ticket. /lol/ Surprise,
surprise!

Hey Tami!

I have to say that I'm going to start tellling people this when they upset
me..."I really hope I'm having eye contact with you..." and then go on.
When I read what you typed I had to laugh.

I think the one that got to me the most was the convenience store. The guy
wouldn't let me talk at all and what really took the cake is when I told him
she was a guide dog, he turned around and yelled that he didn't care what
she was.

Oh, my. Ain't that fun? I figured I could start calling myself an
experienced guide dog handler when I stopped being surprised by these
things, or even noticing once I dealt with it. The first few times, of
course, I could not imagine what would inspire a theoretically civilized
human to behave in such a manner! Was I supposed to take this seriously?
/lol/

So I probably did about the same thing I do now, which is to stare blankly
at the one who is behaving so bizarrely with the same blank stare you
described from Gypsy. Once whoever it is has gotten it all out of their
system, then we can talk about our issues and laws and stuff.

If need be, I pull out my 'tude, which is a lot like my blank stare only
with a bit more dominant body language. Subtle stuff, really, but it does
seem to help clear things up on subject of just how intimidated I am. Which
is generally not at all. I go straight to irritated, even angry, and I let
some of that play in my expression and the quality of my (I hope) eye
contact. Once they've settled down with the extravagant body language and
curses and huff and puff, then we can talk. /lol/

So far I haven't had anybody bring in the cops, but the way you handled that
one sounds like what some of the more experienced handlers do. Just wait it
out and let the other person call the cops on you, then go from there. I
guess it can be iffy doing that if the cops are not informed about the law,
so I'm not eager for an opportunity to try that tactic. /smile/

Good afternoon all!

A question I would like to pose is where do you find that there is an
attempt to deny access to a person with a service animal generally?

As for me, I've worked with Gypsy for about a year and we've only had an
issue three times. One was the week we got home and my mobility instructor
took me out to eat as celebration for making it through training. We went
to a Vietnamese restaurant. the hostess sat us down and all of a sudden the
manager rushed the table and began yelling, "No pets! No pets! You cannot
bring in your pet!" Surprisingly I was very calm...considering this was one
of our first forays into the public after leaving the school. I told him
that she was a service animal and that she was allowed. He kept yelling and
my mobility guy went the heck livid. The manager then left us alone.

I then, some months later, went to a convenience store near my apartment.
I've been in there many times but this particular time, Gypsy and I walked
in and the clerk began yelling and cussing. Of course, I won't and can't
repeat what he said here. He went on and on like that. I offered to call
the police for him after repeated attempts to tell him she was a guide dog
and to show her ID card and bring attention to the harness wrapped around
her. Gypsy just sat and stared at the man. Needless to say, he called the
police himself while berating me until they got there. I showed the police
the ID card and they saw Seeing Eye on the harness. They proceeded to write
the man a ticket. I then organized about five folks with guide dogs to make
a visit to the store. He said nothing.

most recently was this week. A co-worker and I went to a Chinese restaurant
for lunch and the cashier ran to the door saying, "Get out!"

We've honestly had very few experiences considering our time home and the
amount we do go out. It seems though that when we get those few folks who
are simply uninformed....they're really uninformed! LOL!

Have you experienced this problem and what have you done about it?
