[nagdu] Trimming Nails

Do any of you independently trim your dog's nails? I've always taken my dog to somewhere like Petsmart to have it done because I'm afraid that I will cut too much, but I'm wondering if it's possible to feel where the quick is. I tried one of the nail grinding tools, but my usually very laid-back dog completely hated every moment of it. So has anyone had success with using traditional nail clippers?
