[nagdu] nagdu Digest, Vol 74, Issue 23

I have a shunt along with three fusions in my neck, my retired guide accompanied me into the hospital to have my surgeries, and spent time with my family during my recovery. The only places that a working guide is actually not allowed is ICU, but several years ago I had gone to see someone in a major hospital in Dallas and I had a nurse get a little nasty with me. She threatened to call security and I told her to go ahead and when the officers who worked for the hospital responded that told her what I had, and that was that this was a Guide Dog and that she could go anywhere that I was going. I think those nurses got more training. As for actually taking your dog somewhere, mine goes with me to the dentist, but if I am having films taken she simply waits in a stay, just outside the room. Good luck.

I take Bogart to doctors, transplant clinics, when I do blood tests, when I go to the dentist, eye docs, work in seniors extended care centre, in the ultasound room, etc. Generally he is very good and will lay where I ask him to or otherwise he will stand and look on seemingly concerned about what the nasty person is doing to me. (especially curious at the dentist :). I try to explain to him if he doesn't let me brush his teeth he'll end up having to get his teeth cleaned like this.

Once I started dating my current girlfriend (now of 7 years) who doesn't drive by choice, I decided to see where city transit would get us. To my surprise, we are able to get to almost all the hikes I used to get to by car. Yes, it takes a bit longer but who wants to have to drive after hiking 13 km in the foot hills. Last year Susan had hurt her leg so Bogart only had one stinf of about 5 days of hiking in the mountains. He seemed to do really well, no cut feet. Did worry about him falling off drop offs but after a couple of close calls (that is why they have four paws) he seemed to figure it out better. He is great off leash wehn we hike running a bit ahead and then coming back to check in with Susan and then further back to see me. I use 2 trekking poles when not using Bogart. We are able to tackle most things. I'm obviously slower with my poles than a sighted person but Susan says she enjoys hiking with me because I make her look around, partly to tell me what I'm going to encounter and partly because she has time to look around rather than just focussing on the trail to keep up to her friends.

If all else fails, then in my case here in NY, but I am sure you can do that there in TX, I call the police, I make a formal complaint against the company. I then call the local newspaper and local tv station and inform them that this has happened. If it is a good reporter you are talking to they will ask for a statement for the department store representative and they will give there reply

Let them know you were denied access with your guide dog. Tell them date, time, if you can find out the name of the employee who did this, etc. It will help.
