Hi, Chantel,
Each guide dog school program varies from each other.
Since Pilot is in Columbus, OHio, they are smaller than denver, Colorado is
for instance.
They do have a public transportation bus system that the staff and trainies
ride on into further downtown where training routes do take place.
Denver, Colorado has a monarail system known as the Regional Transportation
District (RTD) light rail.
Columbus doesn't have any monarail systems since it's smaller than Denver.
During training when you go down to work inside the shopping mall, there
will be plenty of things for your dog to be exposed to like kids and the
food court alike.
i"m sure if you were to speak with jay Gray, you can share your concerns and
what you'd like to learn during your training session.
Pilot doesn't call their final walk a freelance, but the achievement walk.
As for the achievement walk, the instructor is there with you, but they
allow you to do majority of the work.
Only time they will step in is if a dangerous situation were to arise.
There was one particular street that I had trouble with and had to wait a
while until I could get a direct opening.
If I couldn't get a direct opening, the instructor would call out the light
for me.
In Columbus where Pilot is and the shopping mall, there are no crosswalk
buttons, but the cycles are set to where you do have enough time to cross
the street.
There are bricks on the ground at the corner where you can line yourself up
to cross the street safely.
