Hi, Lee,
Yes, it's to make it last longer and if Odie went to town on it too fast, he 
does tend to get excited and may possibly scratch the inside of his mouth.
That happened one time when he was given a present from a former security 
guard in the building a long time ago.
It was a Purina wrap with chicken filling for dogs on the inside.
Odie got into chewing on it so fast, he scratched the inside of his mouth.
Luckily, he didn't cause any wounds to occur.
As for the organtic Buffalo chin bone, it's now lying on his doggy pillows 
and he knows that he can chew on it when he is ready to.
I let him play with it some more for a little while and he decided to take a 
break from it on his own.
