Hi every one, I have been trying to get a screen reader for my computer for
over a year. My Voc Rehab / independent living counselor has dragged this
out and I am so frustrated.I had a free reader for a while but when I
updated it, It became not compatible with my program. I am still trying to
catch up on my nagdu digests and still have 9 more to read to catch up
completely.I have magnified the text as much as I can, plus I am using 2
lenses and a magnifying glass to read my emails and the nagdu digests.
Believe me, this is slow going........I have been to 2 eye specialists and
they have not sent me the reports I asked for. My counselor got the one
from the doctor that he sent me to. I don't know what that report says
because he refused to give me a copy. That particular doctor was very snotty
to me. She told me that I do not have beginning cataract's.The last doctor
I saw said I did have beginning cataracts. I don't know what to think. Why
would 1 doctor say yes to this and another say no? Not that it makes a
difference in my sight at this point. I have cortical vision impairment and
Macular degeneration.(dry form)This doctor even questioned the double
vision.I feel that I am going backwards here. I could not get a diagnosis
on the double vision for 20 years ,so I just lived with it best I could. A
Neurologist finally made the diagnosis of cortical vision impairment. By
then it was not "fixable".A year later I was diagnosed with Dry form
Macular degeneration and was told I was legally blind and was warned not to
drive.I think the problem lies in the fact that the cortical vision
impairment is a brain problem, stemming from a motor vehicle accident.
These eye docs don't get the fact that it does affect my vision as does the
MD.The fact is,that I can't see well enough to read my computer. I feel
that the MD alone should qualify me for the screen reader. My vision has
changed since the summer and is worse now. I am told that there is no
treatment for the dry form MD. My vision sucks and I am so frustrated as
what to do to get the screen reader that I need. Being Legally blind
qualifies me for a guide dog but I can't get a screen reader? Does any one
have any ideas on how to pursue this? I am going to have to wait til
tomorrow to finish reading the rest of my emails as my eyes are burning and
watering now and it is impossible to read any more tonight. Well I hope
that some one has a suggestion for me. Thanks for listening to my rant.
Mardi and Shaman.
