Your friend may not have been able to keep up the assertiveness over time. I work with a guy who says "Anybody can do anything if they only need to do it for a little while".
Be gentler with your friend.

That depends. As far as Collies go, if you're someone who is good at being
assertive, it would not be a problem. However, collies/border collies are so
smart that intelligence turns into stubbornness. It may not be a problem as
far as guide work, but it can be a problem with smaller things. My friend
had a collie as a guide once. She was not the kind of person to be
assertive. Usually, she could not make him stop barking. One time, when I
was keeping him for a little while, he started barking, and, when I told him
to stop in a firm voice, he did.
