Sean,
It really depends on what sorts of treats you want to give him. Most
grocery stores sell dog treats of the processed variety usually with a
lot of grains and fillers. I'm always nervous about the safety of these
because they seem to be recalled frequently. A lot of people use them
with no problem though. Large discount stores like Wal-Mart, Target etc
also sell dog treats. They have about the same sort as a grocery store
but with a larger selection. The farm supply store here has a decent
selection of dog products. I buy chew bones there. They are real cow
bones. You have to watch to make sure the bones don't break off in
small bits when chewed, but it isn't very often that they do that.
I buy biscuits from Flint River Ranch. The biscuits there are actually
the same thing as their dog foods just in a different shape. Both of my
dogs don't do well with grain so I have to be careful about which grains
they get and how much. The FRR does have some grain but the fish and
potato flavor doesn't bother my dogs. I used to feed that food as their
main diet.
I also give human food as treats. Monty will eat absolutely anything,
including lettuce. Belle is a bit more discerning in her taste. I give
small bits of meat, cheese, carrot, banana etc. as treats. Of course
I wouldn't recommend feeding from the table or using human food treats
any differently than you would treats made for dogs. In my opinion it's
not the type of food you give that can create behavior problems it's the
manner in which the treat is given.
Oh and there are about 1,272,398 places on the internet where you can
purchase dog treats and chews.
