I have had this same situation happen. I am a total with hearing issues, so
this would be almost impossible. If I even think that this will happen, I
have my cell phone in my pocket to call. I had this happen in an apartment
when I lived in Baltimore.

Thanks for sharing, atleast now I know I am not the only one that this has
happened too.

Subject: [nagdu] a recent experience sans cane or dog

This thread caused me to decide to relate a very recent experience when I
was forced to go somewhere very unfamiliar using neither cane nor dog.

I was in Louisville at the Galt House last weekend. I'm sure some of you
have been there for an NFB convention in the last several years. It's a nice
hotel but I'm usually staying in the East Tower where the suite rooms are.
This time I was staying in the West Tower and I'm very much not familiar
with that lobby.

So, Friday evening I got in late, was not feeling well and ordered room
service. After I was done eating, I carried the tray to the door, opened it
and tried to slide said tray down to the floor without dumping it upside
down. I was off balance and moved the foot with which I'd been holding the
door, not even thinking.

Oh, believe me, I thought plenty when I heard that door click shut, my dog
on the inside and me on the outside, sans cane or anything.

OK, time for some Super Blink Action! <grin>

Yes, I walked, granted pretty slowly, down to the lobby. The hardest part
short of getting the attention of a bellman to show me where the info desk
was, happened to be finding an elevator. Many of the Galt House elevators
don't ring when the doors open and those doors close quickly. It must have
taken me over 5 minutes, a long time when you're standing still waiting, to
find which of the 4 doors was opening and get to it from my stance next to
the buttons. My Kingdom for a dog at that point.

When I hit the lobby, I crept along, more afraid of running into the people
coming in and out than of hitting any stationary obstacle. The echo location
in that lobby is pretty good. I acted as if I was looking for someone I was
meeting. Finally I asked if there was a bellman around and Voila! Someone
came up and helped me find the info desk. Whew.

Yep, I felt stupid but the info desk person said "At least you'
Re dressed. You have no idea how many people have to come down here nearly
naked."

OK, I'll take that I guess. Yes, my dog was happy to see me when I got back.
He even looked up from chewing his antler toy when the security guard and I
came in. <grin> So I guess it pays to sometimes be able to go without cane
or dog? Nah.
