[nagdu] portable canes was my adventure without my cane

Hi Julie
I had a telescoping NFB cane and loved it until it broke. I had dropped
it in the snow and water got in the joints and it woulde not collapse
any more. We tried to loosen it and ended up breaking it. The other
problem I had was that every so many feet it would start collapsing. I
would tighten one section only to have another section collapse. I was
constantly stopping to retighten the thing.

I now have an ultra light Ambutec cane I like. I had an ultralight
ambutec cane with the metal glide tip, but I kept destroying them. I
think they get caught in cracks and over time the metal glide tip just
falls apart. The difference is the weight of the cane I think. The NFB
canes are awesomely light. the ultralight ambutec canes are light but
have enough weight that I had to use more force (not much but more than
the NFB canes) to move the thing. The NFB canes I could flick with a
finger just about and have good tactile info.

I have an ILA collapsable cane for short ventures. It still collapses
but not as much for some reason, maybe because of the rounded tip, maybe
because it is shorter, not sure. I have a marshmellow tip on my Ambutec
cane and it works fine for me.

Hope this helps.
