Hi Tatyana

Cane skills are part of it but really it comes down to orientation skills. So in some ways doing a trip to DC as you described might be easier with a dog since they manage things like subways and city scapes so well. What you need to be able to do is to keep yourself orientated in your environment. The dog will get you around the obstacles, take you to the doors, to the stairsor escullators or elevators, keep you from going off the platform and so on but you need to know where you are going. This means, unless you are a good travellor who can figure all these things out by yourself, you would probably want to do such trips with a sighted guide to get a fell for it. I think there are many people who don't do tons of new routes with their dogs. And as you say, maybe with a dog you might be more inspired to ttry new routes to see how they go and give yourself more freedom.

One of the things that influenced me getting a dog is that my girlfriend really wanted a dog and as someone mentioned, the best thing about a guide dog is that they can go with you almost anywhere. If you keep your dog brushed and give it a bath regularly it won't smell. If it isn't a poodle then it will shed but how much really depends on the dog from what I've read on here.

Of course, there are the inconveniences that happen from time to time like today. Bogart was wandering in the middle of the night so I thought maybe he wants to go out. I live in an apartment so this meand getting up and walking around the block. He has horrible diarieaa. So today we have been going out about every 2 hours since then. Nothing as gross as this in my mind anyways. :) If anyone wants to share their cures please feel free. As I've said before I don't worry too much unless something lasts more than 24 hours.

Anyway, I'm being nudged so I think it's time to head out again. Eventually he has to run out of things inside him. :)

Gary
