You can also mix baby food chicken with the rice. I did that for a sick dog once. The idea is bland food that also contains some moisture.

Gary,

I usually give my dogs white rice when they are sick. Monty was sick
last week and I gave him white rice with banana for flavoring. My
family thought it was the most disgusting thing ever, but I thought it
looked rather tasty! LOL

Anyway like others have said I give small amounts several times
throughout the day. I withhold food completely for at least 6 hours
after vomiting. then if I think there's a good chance the food will
stay down I offer a small bit, maybe 2-4 tablespoons. I wait an hour
and if all is well I give maybe a quarter cup of the rice. I wait
another hour and repeat increasing the amount offered each time until it
is a regular portion of food.

Belle has recently decided to be fussy about eating, so I've been
getting creative about her food. Variety seems to be the key, well and
competition. If she thinks Monty is getting ready to eat her food she
is much more enthusiastic about getting to it first. Anyway a bit of
water on the kibble works sometimes. Chicken broth is also tasty and
easily digestible. Boiled boneless chicken is easy on the stomach and a
good source of protein, but I'd try the rice first or a mix with the
rice. I've also noticed that if I give her food as treats for doing
obedience exercises she is more excited about eating.

If you are feeding canned food or rice etc, don't stress about the
water. Those foods contain quite a bit of moisture so he won't need as
much water. Still make sure to offer water. Diarrhea is dehydrating.

I hope he feels better soon.
Julie
