Hi Chantel
Many people on the list have given you good advice. I think the best thing if you want a dog is to live by yourself if possible. Its a shame you have to ask someone if you can bring a dog in there home that would make your life easier and enhance your mobility. It sounds like your friend and her grandchild are afraid of dogs. 
What ever you decide I wish you the best.
