I viewed this as just a myth.
I remember this so well because an English teacher used it as a way to teach mythology. There are apparently five things all myths have, and unfortunately I can't remember what they are. I do still have this teacher's email and I'll ask her what they are, because now I'm curious.  There are also circumstances in which myths start and these circumstances seem to be universal.

I remember this because she made the point that we think of myths as being backwards and things that "people who don't know better" invent.
This myth apparently went viral.  We have to assume that not everybody reading it is stupid or backward. Most probably passed it on because it made them feel good and wish the same for the people they hope to read it.

Not to offend Michael here but did anyone ever consider that this piece in
its initial iteration was meant as satire? That's how I took it when I first
saw it 10 years ago. I do appreciate satire both good and not so good. I'll
reserve judgment on this piece.
