[nagdu] walking in to objects

Lyn,
My trainer had to tell me to stop a couple of times but it was when we got
super close to the object and I would have gotten seriously hurt if he
hadn't said anything. I would then correct her and redo it.
I do have vision and I think it makes me walk a little faster during the day
time but I've been working with a blind fold.

Hannah,
Huh??? Trainer telling you to stop right before you hit something??? There
lies the problem.

At TSE, we were told about a guy who always accepted people grabbing his arm
when he and his dog approched a down curb. This happened over and over over
a period of time. One day, there was nobody to grab the guy as he approached
the curb. The dog just continued into the street and they were hit by a
car. I think he just got hurt.

What happened is that over time, the dog realized that somebody was going to
do the dog's job of stopping so the dog just didn't do it anymore. It
sounds to me like that trainer actually was teaching the dog that he would
always be there to yell at you to stop. Thought bubble over dog's head:
"Oh, I don't have to watch for objects and clear my person."

At TSE, the only time a trainer would phsycally stop a person was when
continuing would result in dire bodily harm. This was usually done a bit
ahead of the problem and the trainer would yell, "Stop!" and the person
would just stop or tell their dog to "Halt" as some schools teach.

Hope the problem is resolveed very soon because once you lose trust in the
dog, it is hard to get it back.

Also, you mentioned about working in the dark or at night. Do you have
vision that enables you to work the dog differently during the day time?
This is something that all of us with some vision has to guard against -
myself included.

Lyn and Landon
