Thanks Meghan,
Now I know the terminology, they were originally known as slip-collars when they first came out. I agree, they are a valuable tool and work well with the softer dogs. Never stop learning! Hug the Dogs!

Doug:
A martingale collar is sometimes called a greyhound collar, too. They were originally used for sight hounds and other breeds who could easily back out of their collars. You have a nylon collar with a chain or nylon loop with a d ring or other leash attachment. They can be fitted lower on the dog's neck and sit loosely like a flat collar, or they can be up behind the dog's ears more where a prong collar or the strap of a gentle leader would sit. When the loop of nylon is pulled, the collar tightens and depending on the adjustment either simply stops the dog from slipping the collar or if fitted more tightly, gives a correction. They are very nice for softer dogs. I worked my Kirby in a martingale collar, because just hearing the sound of the chain collar made her nervous, and she needed minimal if any correction. I am terrible at describing such things.
Picture a nylon strap. Put a d ring on either end of that strap. Thread an additional loop of nylon through both d rings making the collar. Put a d ring on the loop and there you have it. Most collars need to be slipped over the dog's head and then tightened, but more and more companies are making them with quick snaps as they become more popular so they do not need to be loosened and tightened every time one wishes to remove the collar. I love them for all of my dogs! Wow...I just wrote a novel, sorry. I hope there was something useful in there.
