Your second option is pretty much a non-entity I think, because i would be too disruptive. The dog would probably be fine, and maybe if you trusted the person, you could check on him once an hour if you did that. I don't think you would have to do that every ten minutes. But you would have to be comfortable with those you leave the dog with.
