[nagdu] Guide Dogs and Pets

I really like the little critters and Landon has made friends with a couple
of the rats we use for pet therapy with the Humane Society.

Sorry to hear about your pet rat's demise - yes, rats are prey animals and
dogs are preditors. As much as Landon accepts the rabbit, guinea pigs and
rats at our program, I wouldn't think of allowing landon and one of those
animals to be unsupervised in a room alone.

My niece found out that fact the hard way when she had the hamster in his
ball rolling around the house. They all got busy doing other things and
their terrier mix had other plans for the hamster. The dog killed the
hamster by opening the ball up and snatching the little hapless guy. When
she got mad at the dog, I said to her, "Duh, terriers hunt rodents - were
bred to do this."

There just are animals that can't be put together and left alone - birds and
cats, big snakes and rats, well, you get the picture. Dogs do well if they
are introduced off of your property and brought into the house together.
The person must show the existing dog that the new dog is part of the pack
and you're still the head honcho. Give them all attention and love and
they'll be fine.
