Sean,
I wonder if kids today aren't beeing raised with animals in the home like we 
were.  We were taught since early childhood that animals were real, living 
things that needed gentle handling.  To those nasty kids, my answer to their 
questions about kicking and hurting your dog, I'd ask THEM if I could kick 
or hurt THEM! LOL!
