[nagdu] dog food

Hello:

I do pay an ungodly amount for food--however, as I stated in my most recent message on this topic, you may wish to compromise regarding price.
I believe that I owe it to my dog to feed what I believe to be the best food I can find (within reason, of course). I don't plan to switch to raw feeding, as it seems to be unnecessary. Although I did not take price into consideration, I realize that not everybody can make that financial sacrifice. Also, the type of food you feed depends on your dog. Bailey recently had a yeast infection in both ears--I was worried that it might be a grain allergy, so I chose for him a grain-free food (as a side note, grain is not a natural part of a dog's diet, thus it is inadvisable to feed--many dogs develop grain allergies and it is largely filler, as they cannot digest or use the nutrients in most grains). My veterinarian also advised that I switch Bailey to a new protein source. Eukanuba Adult Maintenance is a chicken-based food. Evo Red Meat Formula is a lamb-based food.
In conclusion: yes, I pay a lot for Bailey's food, but that gives me peace-of-mind knowing that through research I was able to find what seems like the best food for him. Nevertheless, I still recommend dogfoodanalysis.com as well as any information you can acquire regarding dog nutrition, ingredients, etc. I hope you find the food that's right for your dog.
Sincerely,
Robert Hooper

Well, I am feeding Iams Minichunks and pay about half that for around 40 pounds.

>> It is important to do research on what is desirable/undesirable in dog foods. This will be a lot easier than just memorizing a lot of "good" foods. Also, manufacturers can change their formula, thus potentially making their food not as desirable. A better approach is to know what you should look for in a label and the techniques dog food manufacturers use to disguise less-than desirable or out-right unnecessary or harmful ingredients. A website I found to be helpful is:
>> This website not only tells you what to look for in dog food ingredient lists, but it contains a database of thousands of dog foods and their labels, along with reviews of most of them. These reviews are written by dog nutritionists, thus supposedly reliable.
>> Once you know what should be in your dog's food, you can find foods that fit that criteria. My Seeing Eye dog Bailey was on Eukanuba Adult Maintenance whilst in class. Last month, I switched him to Annova Evo Red Meat Formula, which in my opinion, is a much higher quality food. However, the better foods often cost more. While I didn't compromise on price, you may wish to do so. In this case, you will have to find a balance between what you find nutritionally acceptable and financially reasonable. I hope this helps--feel free to write me off-list and I can go more in depth about my research process, etc.
