[nagdu] to Sarah on dog behavior

Hello all,
I hope that this issue can be corrected. A friend of mine was recently
matched with a dog that has growling and barking issues. The dog would growl
and let out one bark when someone accidentally bumped into her. She also
would be very alert and constantly look around while in harness, she would
not spread out and sleep, like many of the other dogs in the class. The
trainers noticed this behavior, and the dog was career changed, her puppy
raisers took her back. It was really hard on my friend to have to have a dog
switch, but it worked out for the better, since her dog was just too
stressed out by working. I am not sure if this is the same issue with
Wizzard, it just sounds like he is territorial and weary of new people. But,
this is a trait that guide/service dogs should not have. Wishing you the
best!
Hope this helps.
Deanna and Pascal

Hello Sarah-
I am happy that you are enjoying your new dog. As for the growling, could it
be that the dog was being territorial because he didn't recognize the
people who were coming in to what he considers to be his house and not
growling specifically at your mom and uncle? Some dogs do tend to growl and
bark when they see a person who they don't recognize come in to what has
been their home for many months and it has nothing to do with protecting a
specific person. I hope that you shared this behavior with your trainers
because it needs to be dealt with before you go home with your dog. Also,
you have expressed interest in wanting to become a Braille teacher and
working at JBA in Los Angeles. JBA is a blind adjustment program where some
of the students and staff have guide dogs as well as there is also a program
for children who have severe to profound disabilities on the same campus.
Therefore your dog has to be under control. I am not trying to be mean or
chastise you, I'm being very honest with you on this issue with your dog. I
want you to be successful with your new partnership and if your dog is
growling at people you won't be. So please, please discuss this issue with
your instructors and allow them to assist you with correcting this behavior.

Good luck.
Tina

He growled at my uncle and my mom when they came too close to me.

What do you mean Wizzard protects you from people?

He's a black Labrador named Wizzard! We are already bonding and he's

I believe Tuesday you were matched with your lovely dog. I won't say what
the breed is but i did see pictures on Facebook of all the students and
the moment they were introduced to their beloeved workers. I know 2 of the
students that are in class with you.
Everyone seemed so ahppy about their match. How is it going?
Tell us
 about your dog.

 Best wishes to you
