[nagdu] Dogs and instructors

The dogs will always get excited when they see their instructor--some more than others--but a part of your bonding with them and your letting them know who is in charge is to find a way, perhaps with their help, to get that dog under control and back to attending to you. The first two or three days that might work out OK; after that, you need to be having increasing charge over and "respect" from your dog. Dogs are pack animals, and you are the leader of that pack. If that dog is not doing what it should be doing, then they need to change out dogs. I had a dog l ike that. He just longed for the instrutor. I took him home, and he simply never developed a real confidence that he could do the work. I worked with him for two years; finally I said "enough." Should have said it before I did, but my feelings for the dog got in the way. While we love our dogs, we have to constantly keep in mind why we have them and we need to determine, hard as it might be 1) whether they are meeting that need and 2) Whether keeping on with the dog is worth the struggle or the safety sacrifice we can be making. It's kind of like if you have someone working for you whom you like a lot but who is not performing the task. Hard as it might be, you have to fire that person.
