Hi Terrie,
As a recent graduate of leader Dog and actually a 4th timer, they have
actually increased the number of times they perform traffic checks. They
will generally inform us that we may receive one or two or whatever on that
day, but as you would suspect, we don't know when or where. The other great
thing is that in some cases like has happened to me, we have had natural
traffic checks as well which really help to build that dog's confidence.
The other thing that LD does and I am assuming other training programs as
well, but they use hybrid cars which are not always audible for us as
handlers, but that moving vehicle is what the dog reacts to. I was in the
accelerated program, so my time was a little shortened to only that of 10
training days, but we had at least 3 days of traffic checks in that I
remember.

Hi everyone,
I am very interested in knowing from graduates of a variety of schools
whether your school had an instructor provide a planned traffic check and if
so how many routes or outings this happened on. I am not comparing in terms
of being judgmental, but I am curious as to how various schools handle this.
Having only been to Seeing Eye, I don't know first-hand what other schools
do and am very interested.

My memory from 2002 is that Seeing Eye has someone do traffic checks on 2 or
3 days, probably 4 or 5 routes. Does this sound right to more recent grads?
How about other schools?

Looking forward to learning,
Terrie

Yes. I would say the traffic training is like that of other schools. I'm not
sure what this other practice is. When I've talked with people from other
schools about their experiences with traffic training, they've seemed very
much like what I've experienced on class at GDF.
