 Hi Sarah,
 Welcome to the Nagdu List!
I am Deanna Lewis and I am working my first guide dog, a male
black lab
named Pascal. He is from Guide Dogs for the Blind.
What school are you going to for your guide dog?
Congratulations!
For me, I started bonding with my dog fairly quickly. The first
walk was
 a
bit awkward for us both, but after a few days it just seemed
normal and
 comfortable.
I had a fair amount of usable vision back then, so I wanted to
really
develop trust in my dog, and not rely on my fluctuating vision.
I found
 it
helpful to use sleep shades for a few days in training. I am
glad that I
chose to do this. But, I completely understood when others in
my class
 did
not. It just worked well for me at the time.
Wishing you the best in training!
 Deanna and Pascal

Most of the dogs tend to warm up to you pretty quickly if you
spend a lot
 of
time bonding with them. The first day or two are the hardest, I
think.

Rebecca, thanks for the warning because I may have very well
gotten
discouraged if he/she didn't warm up to me right away. So, good
to know
that if it happens, it's normal. I will still keep praying
though for a
 dog
 that is lovable and playful.

Or you may not. It may take awhile for the new dog to warm up
to you. My
first one took some time to get used to me.
I say this because she didn't want me loving all over her.
I say it this way so you don't get discouraged if your dog is
kind of
 distant towards you.
The point that Tracey is trying to make is that you won't really
be in a
position mentally to do much work.

Tracy, thanks for your suggestion. I have actually done just
that. The
company is aware of my training dates and realizes that I may or
may not
 get
much accessibility testing done while I'm in training.
 Thankfully, they are
 very understanding and generally let me work at my own pace;
since they
know I also work full time and have an eBay business with my
husband.
 I'm very
 blessed in that respect.
As for eBay while I'm at school, I'll mainly just be helping my
husband
relist items and/or print shipping labels; much of which I can
do via the
eBay app on my iPhone. So, that shouldn't be a big deal either.

My number one priority will no doubt be bonding and training
with my new
dog. I'm sure I'll be spending most of my down time relaxing
with and
 loving on him/her.

Only nine days to go. I can't hardly wait!!!

Hope everyone is Having a great weekend,

 Tonia

 Hi Tonia.
You mentioned you plan to do some contract work during your
downtime in
class. I just want to give you a word of caution. If you take
some work,
don't make any promises as to when it will be done, or tripple
the time
 you
think it will take. Even when I wasn't busy with actual
training, there
were lectures to study, grooming, play, and just plain resting.
 I got my
first dog more than 30 years ago, when I was a lot younger. I
don't
remember how much I needed to just plain rest my brain then, but
I
 definitely do now.
Also, if you bring work, be ready to drop it at a second's
notice. It's
easy to get involved with something on the computer, and, when
you finally
surface, your new puppy has torn his blanket to little bits, or
pulled the
blanket off your bed, or any number of other puppy tricks.
I like to play computer games, but I don't think I'll play any
during
 class.
It's too easy to zone out and miss something I should be
noticing.
 Tracy
