With Griffin, I never know, so I have to be alert to what he might or might not do. he may ignore the food. But if he does not, and I detect that his head is aiming in the direction of the food, he is corrected.

What do you all do in the circumstances where you go somewhere
and there's food within the dog's reach, for example, a person in
a wheelchair eating. Do your dogs try to eat the food or do you
ever have to correct them?

I do have a gentle leader but with this behavior, you never know
when
it is coming. I can go weeks without the behavior and then there
it is
suddenly appearing. The gentle leader distracts my dog in small
spaces. I only use it when I know of an issue such as food in
low
places. Smile!
We are in Tennessee and the alergies for my dog are offal. The
gentle
leader seems to make her itch. For this and the reason above, I
use it
sparingly and that seems to have the perfect effect when I do use
it.
Thanks for your suggestions.

If so, this is when you would use it, then you have control of
the dog.
and dog doesn't control you.
If you don't have one, call the school for one.
Just some thoughts.
I also learned about a candy cane collar, this goes around the
dogs
neck under the chin, and the leather straps go over the dogs
nose.
Then you attach to the leash.
Folks don't seem to get as upset with this than they do the
gentle leader.
I myself don't have one, but a friend of mine does.
I was hoping to find this on line, then folks wouldn't give me
grief
using the gentle leader when needed.
And all of the explanations they think they need for why I do
this.
Drives this crazy lady crazy smile.

Actually, the trouble isn't in my office itself, but outside.
When we
leave the office building to walk around in downtown Nashville,
eat
lunch or visit local atractions, seems to be the times when she
sees
other service animals or pets being walked. I suppose she has
decided
its her break as well. Smile!

Hello,
Yes it is ok to get firm with your dog from time to time, even
doing
obedience,
yes the first year is a trip to be sure.
Sense this is at work, I would make sure she is on leash or tie
down in
the office, when you don't know when a person is coming with
their dog
to your office.
She will settle down, just wants to make sure she knows who the
boss is.
How about that, you are a boss smile.
Or I love to say top dog is.
That is you.
Do you ever see these folks from the job, as in meetings, or
some kind
of gathering?
Then if you wish you could do a small bit of meet and greet,
then they
settle down.
Just some thoughts.
yes we all have to try to stay on top of it all, you never know
what
the dog will be coming up next.
I always say,
"You must have stayed up all night long to come up with this new
plan.

Good afternoon guide dog users,
Having been a guide dog user for eight months, I thought I was
finally
over the bumps in the road. However, in the past month or so, I
have
begun to see a slight change in my guide dogs distractions with
other
dogs. During training in January she ignored other dogs
completely.
During Washington Seminar in February, she was only slightly
interested in other dogs but her interest didn't stop our work
in the
hotel. In March, during our state convention she did fabulous,
but
there were no dogs around. In May during my transition to a new
job,
she was only mildly distracted by other guide dogs or pets near
her.
She is a fabulous guide, never misses a curb or a beat in high
traffic
areas or crowds, and is obedient to a fault. It has just been
in the
past few weeks that she has begun to get excited when seeing
other
dogs and with several guide dog users in the vicinity of my
office,
this is becoming a little unsettling to me. She will whine and
pull
toward the other dog until I get forceful.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to stop this behavior
before
it becomes an issue, I would greatly appreciate them. My guide
dog is
a 3-year-old lab and is as gentle as a lamb. She seems to want
to run
and play, and suddenly forgets all that she is supposed to be
doing.
As soon as I redirect her, she completely obeys, but I want the
behavior to stop completely. Am I being unrealistic?
Warmly,
Sheri Anderson
