[nagdu] First Flight with New Dog

My dogs have never had to relieve until they got to destinations. I think
my longest flight was Buffalo to San Diego but I've had longer times due to
longer layovers. I give my dogs some ice during the travel so their mouths
feel less dry and they get some moisture.

Hi Kody.
I've flown Delta/Northwest many times. The cross-country planes do tend to
be big, but that doesn't necessarily mean more leg-room.
I've had trouble with officious flight attendants and gate agents, trying to
dictate where I should sit. "You must sit in the bulkhead," they say. But
Ben fits better under a non-bulkhead seat. I strongly recommend not letting
them know you have a guide dog beforehand.
Most relief areas are outside security. I usually give Ben a chance at
home, then again before we go in the airport, and he's good until we reach
our destination, where I give him the earliest relieving opportunity I can.
The flight from Newark to Great Falls, Montana, is 6-8 hours, and he does
fine holding it that long.
Oh, and I think that the dog picks up on the handler's feelings. If I stay
calm, the dog will probably stay calm. But I think all my dogs have sat up
during take-off or landing. I just rub the dog's ears, give a neck-rub,
whatever gentle happy thing I can do. I don't know if their ears pop like
mine do, but a bit of an ear-rub always seems to be appreciated.
HTH.
Tracy
