[nagdu] walking in sidewalk less areas

Hi Sarah,

I have been on a few streets here that have no sidewalks, too many for me.
Cass does not like them either. I was instructed to goes about 10 feet and
then find the edge of the street, or curb if there is one to make sure we
are not too far from the edge. I find that she has a tendency to always
wander out to the center. I started to give her a lot more food rewards to
stay closer to the edge of the road and this has helped a lot. Cass is very
food motivated, but of course she is a lab, who has been a bit slighted
lately on the list <lol>. You might try food as the great motivator. As for
not wanting to get into the harness, I also had the problem with CASs and to
some extent still do. I have been told she is "harness-shy" and that this
does not mean that the dog does not like to work, but that they do not
necessarily like to have the harness on their back, or rather the action of
putting the harness on. This too, I have been able to resolve with positive
reinforcement and food.
Hope my two cents helps a little.

Daniel and Cass in Denver. And it is going to snow again tomorrow - enough
already!

Chantel,

My dog will walk as if he is drunk and he will sometimes veer
into the middle of the road. The trainers said to just stop
about every 5 or 10 steps and see how far away I am from the edge
that separatethe the dirt from the street. It's also very
frustrating because when the trainers watched us do it, he did it
flawlessly. However, when we're by ourselves, that's how it
goes, he will walk and zigzag like he's drunk. And when I go to
put his harness on he is very unenthusiastic. Whenever he knows
we're going for a walk, and I put his harness on, he will not
stand up. I have to repeat the "stand" command like 3 times
before he will finally give in and stand up. When his trainers
are here, they don't believe he's not excited to work, because in
their presence, he's very excited to work and does perfect. So
I'm not sure what to do in this situation.

Sara,

Where Motley and I live, there aren't any sidewalks either.

We have to walk along the curb in the street.

Maybe you might need a dog more suited for sidewalkless travel?

Not sure on that one.

Chantel and Motley.

Hello,

I was wondering if ayever has worked their dogs in sidewalkless
areas. I have to because that's where I live, but my guide hates
working sidewalkless. He walks very slow and bored-like. I'm
just wondering if anyone has ever walked sidewalkless teas with
their guide dogs and how it was.
