Thank you Howard, and that has been my experience also. I have had the VA
provide a social worker take my dog out to relieve himself but generally I
have provided that function.

Guide dogs don't have rights under ada law you as blind user have rights and
your dog can go where the public goes. Your dog can go into a hospital with
you, except where they need to keep the area clean of hair and particles.
Just know is your problem to take your guide dog out to break and feed him
and if you are sick you may not be able do that for the dog. The hospital
does not or can do take care of your dog. I live in a co op in new York and
I can take my dog any where I can go as an owner of my co op into the gym or
work out areas or parks. The public does not have rights to private parts of
grounds where I live only owners of our co op do and I can go any whereI can
go, that is under ADA law.

Dear Ken,

Then, I suggest you read access laws as regards guide dogs more
carefully; service dogs do different kinds of tasks, and vets aren't always
the sharpest knives in the drawer either when it comes to what they let
their dogs do--it's like saying doctors know smoking is bad and don't do
it--and this isn't true.
	Of course, your dog deserves playtime but not in your condo's pool;
I am quite sure our HOA would not allow me to let my dog **in** the pool,
but I could have him help me get to the pool area and put him in a safe, and
cooler place.
Guide dogs have never had the access rights we have, and this
applies to hospitals, too, though there may be a shade difference, as you
can't use your dog, generally, while hospitalized, but I know someone who is
being allowed to keep her dog with her in a psychiatric facility.

I question your " access laws are for people" as I mentioned he is allowed
to stay in my hospital room with me and every place I go like on the beach
where dogs are restricted. My purpose of this inquiry is to get
clarification on ADA and not personal opinions. Most people I know with
pools and Labs have them in their pools all the time and that includes my
vet and what is wrong with "Play Time"?
Thanks,
Ken & Ace

Dear Ken,

Access laws apply to peo9ple not dogs; you can take him there, but I
suspect that if they don't want the dog in the pool, especially if residents
claim allergies, you won't have much to go on; besides, why would you put
your dog in highly chlorinated water?
Curiously, Darla

Thanks for the reply. Ace gets shaved once a month, groomed once a week and
brushed in between so I am not too concerned about the filter and I would
think ADA would trump any local ordinances but I just can't find a ADA
ruling on the subject.
Thanks again,
Ken & Ace

Hi Ken,

So long as it is cool enough, I don't know why you shouldn't take
him so long as people don't bother him or he bother anyone else.
If you're asking about actually allowing him to swim with you, I'm
not sure there is a law that applies, but it will tend to clog up the pool
filter and thus not make the HOA very happy. <grin> Darla & Huck

I recently attended a continuing education class to maintain my LCAM
license. During the class the question came up about Guide Dogs in condo
settings and access to swimming pools.

The answer was that in most cases Guide Dogs should be thought of as being
invisible as they were allowed anywhere their owner was.

I know that my Guide Dog has stayed in my hospital room with me on several
occasions and is allowed anywhere but the OR.

I would love to swim in our condo pool but only with my dog as I don't feel
comfortable without him.

Do you have any information in this regard? I have tried to Google it for an
answer, and it may be my limited computer skills but I can't find an answer.

Do have any info on this?

Ken & Ace
