Congratulations on Shasta! May you both have many years of adventures 
together.

With regard to the chewing, some dogs are just very oral like that. When 
you get your new leash, I'd recommend spraying it with bitter apple. It 
won't make the leash sticky or anything, but it's a good idea to do it a 
couple of hours before you actually have to go anywhere. This worked 
very well with my dog, who went through a phase where she thought 
leashes were her newest portable chew toy.
