I'm listening to an interview on the radio about bomb-sniffing dogs.  One
of the speakers runs a dog-security company, and he says they get their
dogs from 5 sources:  Fidelco, GEB, TSE, GDF, and Puppies Behind Bars.  He
says that they get the would-be guide dogs who are too sniffy, or too
toy-obsessed, or too hyper, and those are just the things needed in a
sniffer dog.  He says shepherds usually prefer play rewards, while labs
prefer food.  He says that sniffer dogs retire around 8 years old to live
the easy life as pets.
I always think it's interesting to hear what happens to puppies who don't
make it as guides.
