The program I attended instructs grads to use the "side" cue. You
approach the door, and if it opens out toward your left, you move your
dog over to your right before opening the door. This is done by
dropping the harness handle, then passing the leash behind your back
from your left hand to your right hand while giving the cue "side,"
which the dog will obey by turning around, walking behind you and
heeling on your right. You open the door and heel the dog through,
then with your left hand, grab the leash and pick up the harness
handle. Some people stop to grab the leash and harness handle again.
But it becomes a fluid motion that you can do on the move.
It's weird to break it down like that. It's so natural for me and the
golden guy.
