[nagdu] I'm back

Hi Buddy,

You're assessment of the dogs are right. the dogs are very young when you get them. With their intelligence and spunk. they tend to be quite hard to handle.

The vet has been the worst experience for me. As he smells all the animal smells and goes nuts.

Really, the only other problems I'ave had with him after two weeks and a few days, is that he won't, or doesn't like the water here, and will drink as little of it as possible. Making potty time difficult at best.

You're right about no screening process. That could be done when the person gets to Pilot and the instructors see the students first hand. They could, at that time, make a judgement after watching them behave during training, that they are not fit for a dog.

They are wasting a lot of money between the dogs themselves, and the room and board when they allow people to obtain dogs that frankly, and this is my opinion, aren't fit to take care of themselves, much less a dog.

I think that a lot of it is that the people themselves don't do as they're told after training.

Three people from our class that I keep in touch with, actually four, are not observing the keeping the dog on leash for at least four to six weeks.

That causes so many problems as far as house manners, and I see it starting already with some.

You can have perfect and wonderful training. But if the people who get the dogs don't do what they're tolf with th dogs, who are filled with pee and vinegar to begin with that's when problems start.

I've learned that the more I work Shasta. The harder the circumstances in which the work is, that he is much calmer and better behaved. His favorite thing to do is work.

Anyway, I'll shut up now.

I do agree with a lot you said Buddy, so don't think I'm totally nullifying what you're saying. But, I have to say, that it totally has a lot to fo with the handlers doing what they're told to do and how they're told to fo it that determines the behavior of any guide.

JMO and have a great day,

Jenny

First, understand I’m not bashing the school, and I have definitely seen some fine teams come out of there, as from all the schools. I haven’t sen anything from the end product of todays Pilot, ’s some very fine teamwork to suggest that training is in any way subpar, and really, bad handlers and mismatched teams can come out of any school. I do observe, however, that dogs from Pilot that I’ve seen do require perhaps more handling than from other programs, just meaning that the ones I’ve met seem very exuberant and, being very intelligent, perhaps prone to push the envelope. Understand that I’ve only seen a very small sample of pilot dogs, and my experience may not be normal, and I probablydon’t know what I’m talking about as regards very general (and I mean *very* general) observations. Enough disclaimer?

By this, I mean that there doesn’t appear to be much of a screening process. A friend of mine got a dog from pilot recently, and they didn’t ask for a video, they didn’t send anyone out to observe her orientation skills or interview her, they didn’t have anyone to observe the environment the dog would be in, even from a home video. It seems they basically took her written word, and that of her O&M instructor or report or what have you, and of references (one such being me) and slotted her into a class. While I admire the belief that everyone should be given a chance to have the advantages afforded by travel with a guide dog, I do think that at least *some* screening of applicants would be helpful.
