[nagdu] Winter Apparel For Dogs

I didn't make the boots or no boots choice, my dog did. And indeed, you are
only a few degrees warmer overall but I think with no snow in Winterpeg.

I'm stood at lots of bus stops with shivering dog, guilty master, and the
usual silly chirpers who make real quaint observations, like "your dog is
shivering," "your dog is cold," (oh, really?) I really do wish at times my
dogs would have accepted boots of some kind.

However, having said all that, how do you deal with getting on and off
busses with the floor covered in melted snow (and no doubt much more
disgusting substances) with the boots getting wet and freezing once you
leave the bus, especially if you then have to stand to wait for a transfer.
I had thought of rubber soul boots (not the Beatles Album) but have read and
heard several comments about them being the least easy for dogs to accept,
not to mention traction problems in cold weather. Wonder if winter rubber
boots are made, like winter tires where the rubber is conditioned to remain
more "grippyy" in cold weather.

Being such a mean miserable man, I've worked my dogs for up to an hour in
minus 45 and in motion, there is no sign of doggie discomfort but stop for
15-20 seconds and the shivering set in, on both of us.

Doug; we know what happens when humans lift up both feet at once, don't we?

: It is going to be 15 below zero up here in Minnesota, I think boots are a
good idea. I do wonder when you decide boots or no boots. If you are going
to be standing at a bus stop for a time, boots. If the dog is going outside
to do his duty in your backyard, no boots. I have always felt that with the
big dogs, that if they are out playing and running around in snow, then I
don't think boots are in need, but when they have to be standing and walking
on sidewalks, and parking lots, that are icy and cold, then I think boots
are a good thing. Remember your dog is barefoot, even if he has furry feet.

: Methinks that dogs wearing boots is often highly over rated. That fact
that
: the dog doesn't like them is sending an obvious message.
:
: Unless you have had issues with an unbooted dog, why go through the
bother.
: If you really need to have the dog wear any foot coverings, there has
: already been discussion on conditioning acceptance; Coles notes, do
practice
: when in a safe secure place, like at home with appropriate rewards.
:
: Doug: My dogs do not believe these boots are made for walkin'.
