[nagdu] Choking!

Dear Deanna,

The Red Cross does offer dog first aid; it was presented at Top dog
a conference held by some of the southern affiliates of GDUI and also at a
smaller event I attended.
Sadly, I don't remember if there was a modified Heimlich maneuver
for canines, but you would want to see if you could remove the object with
your fingers first, and it would seem, on dogs the size of most guide dogs,
you could do a modified Heimlich Maneuver.

Subject: [nagdu] Choking!

Hi,
What do you do when you think your guide dog is choking on something? Can
you give the Heimlich maneuver to a dog? Do you reach down their throat and
try to find the object they are choking on?
I think that it would be very beneficial to learn pet first aid, etc. At our
last Ohio NFB Convention we had a vet student come and do a presentation for
Oagdu, it was great! But, I can't recall if she talked about what to do if a
dog is choking?
Thanks for any comments.

Deanna and Pascal
