Ann,

I don't know if the one I'm reading is the most recent version or not. I
was wondering about clicker training as I was reading though. I'm not done
with it yet. Actually I'm only a little way through. So maybe it's in
there in later chapters?

Julie

Hi, Julie,

I thought I had heard a couple of years ago that GDB was now using clicker
training with their puppies when they are with the puppy raisers. But from
your message I gather that the puppy raising manual doesn't reflect this. I
wonder whether perhaps the manual isn't the current one, or perhaps clicker
training is used more as "one tool in the toolbox" rather than as the
underlying training philosophy. It would be nice to see what a thoroughly
positive training philosophy and process from puppies' birth through
training and handling might produce. I know it does great things for
horses' minds, emotions, and working life spans, not to mention the same
results for the human side of the partnership, so I wish some organization
would be brave enough to try it for guide dogs. And GDB seemed to be closer
to taking that plunge than any of the other schools.

Best,
Ann

I was reading the GDB puppy raising manual. It's available publically at
their website. There's a section in there about choking. Sorry, I can't
remember exactly what they recommended, but it would be easy to look it up,
if someone were so inclined.

Honestly it's been a fascinating read so far. I'm not a fan of correction
based training, but I'm learning a lot. There are things I hadn't really
considered before. I especially like that the why of each rule is
explained. For example they don't allow fetch games and they go on to
explain that it teaches the dogs to chase, which could interfere with later
guide work. I don't happen to agree, but I really appreciate that they
relate everything back to the final goal of working as a successful guide.

Julie
