[nagdu] My turn to go to school

I wouldn't say that a dog bed is essential. Mine never had one, until my
last dog got old and wanted a soft cushion. I've had 6 dogs, and they were
all happy with the mat the school gave me.
Also, the school gives out grooming supplies, so buying a brush isn't
necessary, unless you don't like the one the school chose.
For things needed after getting home, I'd wait and see, except for food and
baggies.
I know many people want specific poop bags, but I've always liked the
sandwich bags that can be closed with a twist tie. They're cheap and easy
to get.

Before getting your dog, you should pup-proof your place. Get lids for
trash cans or place waste baskets behind closed doors or on top of
shelves/counters/dressers where they cannot be reached. Crawl through
your apartment and pick up small items off the floor, and clear low
and coffee tables of any items that can fall victim to being swept by
a wagging tail.
Also, call around to different vets and ask some questions. Ask about
pricing for check ups, different vaccines, and different general
procedures such as diagnosing and treating ear infections. Ask if they
will give discounts for service animals. Look into where the emergency
vet's office is onsite or at a different location. See if the vet
offers nonveterinary services such as boarding, grooming, and
pharmacy.
Lastly, find local grooming salons if you’re not willing to bathe your
dog at home. Some are pricy while others are inexpensive. Some have
self-washing stations where you can bring your dog and bathe him with
the supplies offered at the salon’s station. This is a low-cost way of
getting your guide clean without having to pay out of the wazoo and
clean up a big mess afterward.
Must-haves after returning Home:
Food, Poop bags, Large dog bed
Toys: see what kinds your dog likes and what activities your dog
enjoys (i.e. chewing, tugging, playing fetch)
Crate and crate pad, Extra leash, Dog booties, Tie down
Preventive meds, Ear cleaning solution
Comb, brush, and rake
One or two towels
Optional supplies:
Doggy shampoo
Rain slicker, Winter jacket
Travel bag/back pack for dog supplies, Collapsible/portable water dish
Treats
Nail file or drimmel nail grinder
Be blessed on your journey with your new guide.

Dear all,
After several years of planning and a few of waiting, in is finally my
turn to go to guide dog school. I will be going to GDF for the July
class! I am very excited and nervous. In planning for my dog, I am
making a list of things to get and do, so what are your top three
suggestions for things to do before getting my dog, and what is
something you think is important to get after coming home?
I have already decided on Blue Buffalo for guy food, and will be
trying to puppy-proofing my apartment. I would welcome any resources
on doing that as well.
Excited,
Jewel
