[nagdu] Landlord Issues

Hi guys,
I've been following this thread. I'm surprised in NYC you (Kolby or Kody -
sorry, forget which one!) are having with having a guide dog in your
apartment.

I'm someone who goes by the "Proceed until apprehended" way of thinking. In
other words, I don't ask ahead of time UNLESS there's a really good reason
to do so. Reasons like a roommate who has dog allergies, extreme fear of
dogs, you're renting a room in someone's house. I always bring my dogs when
apartment hunting so if there's ever an issue, the dog is there and I find
out way before I hand over any money or sign any leases. I won't live where
I will be harrassed by anti-dog managers or landlords, period. I've never
had an issue with a prospective landlord - ever in my years of renting since
1972. I've lived in Boston, Montpelier, Chula Vista, La Mesa, and now San
Diego - all were very good about my dogs and they got to see my dog and its
behavior right then and there and they were please with what they saw. These
were large cities and small towns, too.

When I lived back east, our apartments were all hardwood floors. I didn't
encounter carpeted apartments until I moved to San Diego area almost 25
years ago. What I used to do in my east coast apartments was to purchase a
large piece of carpeting that fits almost like wall-to-wall carpeting and
covers all traffic areas. I had the carpeting mostly in the livingroom but
sometimes I got carpeting for the bedroom as well. This carpeting is
something you can just roll up and take with you when you move or need new
carpeting.

It is true that dog nails and dog bones are loud to the tenant under you -
been there, done that! The dogs do feel more comfortable walking on carpet
rather than hardwood flooring because the hardwood floor is slippery for the
dog.

I would definatly offer to the landlord that you will purchase carpeting to
dull the noise for your downstairs neighbor. If he still gives you crap,
then I would try to move to a more dog-friendly place. Believe me, if you
end up taking legal action against the landlord and stay there, he can still
grudgingly admit the dog but make your life hell and harrass you about every
little thing. Life's. Too. Short. to deal with that. Especially if you are
a student and need to concentrate on your studies.

If you opt to move, I'd STILL bring whatever action you can against the
landlord. Perhaps you can have him made to pay your moving expenses! If
nothing else, you can move to a better place and have piece of mind. And
the results of the action will make that guy less likely to try that stunt
on another guide dog or service dog user in the future. You don't want to
let the guy get away with it because that does impact the rights of others.

HTH.
