[nagdu] families and guide dogs

This is a very interesting discussion. I have had this problem. The
part of Marry's situation that I relate to the most is the people who
rush my dog. I have family members who like to rush Brie, especially
when we are crossing streets. I generally don't listen to them and
let Brie do her job. Just last weekend I was walking with my mother.
Brie slowed down, and my mother got agrivated because Brie had slowed
me down. It turns out that we were nearing a high curb, and Brie
wanted to make extra sure I didn't trip over it. I attempted to use
this as a lesson for her. Of course, I tend to rush my dog as well,
and she doesn't listen if we are nearing curbs or about to cross
streets. So I guess there is no harm done.

I suppose that you can tell them that your dog is working, and her job
is not to listen to your family, but to you. Tell them that if they
can observe without being critical, then that would be great, but if
they can't, they shouldn't tell you anything about your dog when she
is working.

On a conference call last night, the Missouri Association of Guide
dog Users was discussing different guide dog related pamflets.
Perhaps we need to have one specifically for the families and close
friends of guide dog users.
