I agree with Julie on the best thing isn't what we want it to be. 
Stephanie, since you have little kids (I don't like sleeping with my door
shut especially when mine isn't feeling well) I'd highly suggest a crate.
Your dog will be contained, your stuff won't get destroyed and you will
sleep better literally and figuratively.

What about shutting the door to the room your sleeping in?  Presumably it
would be your bedroom and you'd have knowledge and control over what is left
out.  I use a crate at night until I'm pretty confident my dog can handle
being left out at night.  If I was wrong and he wasn't ready, it's back into
the crate.  Monty was kind of horrible about chewing up stuff when he was
younger.  Not only did I not enjoy trying to figure out how to reconstruct
my couch cushions, it was dangerous for him.  I can understand wanting to
give your dog freedom, but think about the costs.  Sometimes the best thing
isn't what we want it to be.

My Gypsy is a chewer. But, she tends to go for things she shouldn't, only at
night. I do my best to put every thing away, but family members leave stuff
out and she gets at it. I don't want to tie her down at night and was
wondering if there are any other options?
